Human being should know their RUNAS. For our life now, who we are in debited to and how we should be grateful for our tomorrow.
In the western world specifically in America they celebrate Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is all about reflecting on blessings and acknowledging gratitude
“Whereas it is the duty of all Nations to acknowledge the providence of Almighty God, to obey his will, to be grateful for his benefits, and humbly to implore his protection and favour. Thanksgiving and prayer to be observed by acknowledging with grateful hearts the many signal favors of Almighty God, for their safety and happiness.’”
Our Sanatana Dharma has thought us to be grateful in more meaningful ways and with more details. Man ought to live in harmony with his surroundings to elevate himself above nature and finally attain the state of Emancipation. In his endeavor, he needs and is needed by many sections of the society. The great Rishis of Bharatvarsha, to whom we are all so indebted, gave us the knowledge in form of rules – which by incorporating into our lifestyle, our purpose of birth is achieved.

Pitru Paksha: Expressing Gratitude
We have taken all the things that we have today for granted. But without the generations that came before us, firstly we would not exist here; secondly, without their contribution we would not have all the things that we have today. So instead of taking them for granted, today is a day when we express our gratitude to all of them. It is done as a ritual to pay homage to one’s dead parents, but is actually an expression of gratitude for all those generations of ancestors who lived before us.
